It’s easy to get discouraged watching the news and hearing people state that things have never been worse. You are almost afraid to bring up politics at a family gathering for fear of the arguments that my ensue. Yes, we still have homeless people, racial prejudice, immigration issues, wars and climate change is upon us. And as always, we as a society could be doing so much better. That short-term perception in time can get anyone discouraged. If we remember our history, none of these problems are new. To get a long-term perspective, it is helpful to look at the world through the eyes of my 92-year-old Mother.
When we go to lunch if the conversation is not about baseball (she is a diehard Detroit Tigers Fan) or football (a Michigan Fan) it turns to all the changes in the world. Just think what has happened in her lifetime. She has seen the best and the worst of humanity. From the Great Depression, World War II, the Holocaust, a man walking on the moon, to toppling of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. She has seen the invention of nuclear warheads, computers, televisions, microwave ovens, the internet, cell phones, smart phones, self-driving cars, and McDonalds. We often forget what the world looked like 90 years ago. Many of the things we take for granted were only science fiction then. Imagine what people in the 1930’s would think about people talking with no one around them with only an earbud in their ear. They likely would lock them up.
As we celebrate a truly American Holiday, we need to take joy in being with friends and family, giving thanks for the many blessings that we have. Looking forward to the new inventions that have yet to be thought of and the challenges that lay ahead.
